Before the name Wi-Fi was chosen, one of the names considered was Dragonfly. Can you imagine “Free Dragonfly?”

In 1999, one of the first tasks of the newly-formed Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) was to pick a more user-friendly name — something consumer-oriented and less of a mouthful than “IEEE 802.11 High Rate Wireless LAN”. A branding firm was hired to propose some possibilities, one of which was Dragonfly. Obviously the winning name was Wi-Fi, and WECA shortly changed their name to the Wi-Fi Alliance.

This story is detailed in Beyond Everywhere.
